On the first day of the New Year, I stepped out to see the change. Same sky, cloudless. No traces of much needed rain. Same sounds of cars whizzing past. Muffled faces. And then I saw him in the corner – HOPE! All bundled up, still shivering! I looked at him with expectant eyes.
“Procrastinator! Are you illusionary?” I sneered at him.
He spoke to me:
“I know you love me
I know you hinge on me
When you tread on darker paths
I know I inspire you.”
“And you take pleasure in elusive tricks?”
“ I have my constraints
I float on the tide of time
I possess no magic wand
I hold a mirror to your ways.
“Sometimes I get caught
In the currents of cacophony
Discords and disharmonies
Pull me down, make me dormant.”
“And so you walk out?”
“I am always around
I whisper through the breeze
I glisten in your heart
I blend in your prayers.
“I absorb all words, perceptions and actions
My strings are stronger than faith
Those who hang on get rewarded
But your own role matters most.

We all need Hope, Balroop. We hang onto it like a piece of string, it’s endless, and has many uses. Hope is always wishing! While Faith is all knowing. By combining them together maybe with the right intentions, we then can create a brighter Destiny. Let’s hope so, as we keep the faith. 🙏💚🙏💛
Much love your way dear friend. 🙏❤️
Thank you for the love and the faith Sue… hope sustains us when have no other choice.
It does .. we then trust our inner knowing which cannot be explained but in which we trust. 💓
Wow! That was simply amazing, Balroop. I do believe it’s my faith that gives me hope, but they are best combined as Sue said above.
I think this is one of your best poems with beautiful insight. Happy New Year, my friend!
Thank you Mae, starting the year with HOPE is the only glimmer around us… still cooped up in our homes and unimaginable political upheavals are so upsetting! May 2021 soothe our nerves!

Lets hope the road is going to smoothen and steer us out of the grime and unrest of the times, created by some selfish people.

Have a lovely weekend Balroop..hugs♥
Balroop, I think I was meant to read your post at just this moment … when the news reports in the UK plummet from dire to hopeless I needed a reminder of what HOPE really is. No wonder it becomes lost now and then in ‘In the currents of cacophony’ but it never abandons us. However, we must never lose sight of hope, its constant presence … a very moving poem and I like its question/answer format! Here is to hope reigning strong in 2021! xx
You are right Annika, world has emerged from worst scenarios with faith in their eyes and hope in their hearts. Better days are ahead. Thank you for coming over to share your thoughts, much appreciated.
Your poem is timely and perfect for what the U.S. and the world is enduring, Balroop. After Wednesday’s events, your words soothe and pave the path to move forward with Hope in our hearts and minds. We cannot let it go dormant because then the darkness will encase us. Here’s to hoping for softer days as this year unfolds. xo
No darkness can ever overpower the power of light Lauren. Sunrise is the law of nature! Thank you for sharing your insights. 🤗❤️
Of course! I agree, Balroop. 🥰

What a brightness this poem brings, Balroop! We surely need to cling on to the strong string of faith to see the things we hope for will come true. Our strings combined are stronger than one. I’m thankful for this community!

A wonderful description of the first day of the New Year, Balroop! Same as yesterday except for HOPE. Wow, “I am always around.” My interpretation is how free will plays the most important part in how the tide will change. Today felt like a hopeful day throughout our planet. Thank you for sharing your thought-provoking and beautiful words.xx❤️
I am delighted to hear your inspiring words Erica. Yes, tides do change. Cheers to that change.
This is so pretty. Reading it made me smile. We really need more hope and kindness in this world, especially in our current state.
Thank you so much for your lovely words M&M. Welcome to Emotional Shadows.
As the others have said, this is an amazing poem. Really creative of you to turn darkness into a character and talk to it. So true darkness and challenging times can inspire – and perhaps inspire us for the better. That last line is haunting – and I feel it means we have to own our own role and circumstances in life, focus on what we want and move forwards to a better tomorrow. I also like how at the beginning you were very honest about the way of life as it still is…we can all hope for a better tomorrow, and hope is such a powerful thing. Take care, Balroop 🙂
Thank you Mabel, I am delighted to hear your thoughts about this poem. There are various ways to draw inspiration from our surroundings. I try to look at the positive aspects of situations… a lesson taught by life. 🙂
Using first letter extensions of a topic word as you showed with HOPE provides a nice idea to create greater meaning in blogs , Thanks for the idea.
Many thanks for coming over to read my poetry, much appreciated.
You’re welcome.
