Future

Unknown Future

More than once I have made
Inroads into the future
Stepped into the unknown,
To peep, to think, to decide.

Amazing pictures have lured me,
A lovely deep forest, frightening.
A vast valley, intimidating
A long road, reassuring.

A positive spirit, soaring high
A nagging doubt, pulling back
A persistent hope, guiding me,
Assuring me…go ahead!

Though uncertain, I step forward
Trust is my only companion,
Love for loved ones
The only cementing force.

As I wait for the true picture
As I look at the fragile relationships
As I meet a new face everyday
I wonder why future is so obscure!

  1. Future is a blank page and it’s so hard to face it Balroop. Even if we know that worrying won’t change the deal.
I feel that “Love” and “Be confident” is the only way to walk this unknown path. Wishing you all the best Balroop. Have faith for the best.

    1. Marie, this is one of my earliest poems, an excerpt from my book. When I look at it today, I am happy to note a streak of positivity in my thoughts but nothing has changed…future still remains obscure!

Thanks for the wishes…sending them for you too. 🙂

  2. Future, and past, are constructs required by the mind to keep step with time. Living in mindfulness of present releases the mind from the bondage of time paving the way to a fulfilling life. So anchor mind in the present, letting it swing to past and future only as minimally as possible, as may be required for the daily business of life. By so practising, balroop, future need not appear all that obscure.

    1. Hi Raj,

Mindful living doesn’t seem appealing when we are young and enthusiastic to explore the complexities of life…the yearning for a fulfilling life comes much later and by the time we realise the need, more than half of our life fleets by!

Future would still remain obscure dear friend, in a number of ways if we keep accepting the challenges of life. 🙂
Thank you for sharing your view, much appreciated.

  3. Future changes its direction every moment. Though the foundation of future is built on our past and present, it always remains a mystery to us. Obscure because we are not certain, not sure of it. Trust and love, as you’ve said, are our co-travellers in this journey to the future, every moment… 🙂

    1. Yes Mani, future keeps changing its direction, sometimes unexpectedly and we get carried away by its alluring characteristics. 🙂
Thank you for sharing your thoughts.

  4. I think you captured the secret with these 3 lines:
    “Trust is my only companion,
    Love for loved ones
    The only cementing force.”
That’s how it’s done. Lovely poem, Balroop.

    1. Thank you Diana…this poem was written at a time when future appeared to be intimidating…no longer so! There comes a stage in life when we tell ourselves…come what may! I think I have reached that stage at such a young age…LOL!! 🙂

  5. Thanks always for your thoughtful, vulnerable sharing. Though I completely agree with Rajagopal on this one, we all take our own paths of discovery. In this, I wish you well. Aloha, dear one.

    1. I am glad that this poem resonates with you Lisa…future is indeed unpredictable even when we plan for it. It surprises even when we make our best efforts to change its course! 🙂
      Thanks for sharing your perspective.

  6. The future does worry me more due to monetary concerns than the people, my loved ones and friends, do. The path to me is uphill until I can find someone to share the load. I have made unwise choices in partners and lost money due to their choices.

I will hope and love ( your two outlined words) and will reach a happy future one day, leaving this earth and meeting those who have gone before me. Thank you for how you expressed this, Balroop. ❤

    1. Hi Robin,

I am sorry you had to go through those unfortunate situations…nobody intentionally takes such decisions, they just happen to make our path more arduous. I wish you the best of opportunities and good luck with your future.

Thank you for sharing your story. Surely you would meet a brighter future. 🙂 Stay blessed.

  7. 🙂🙂🙂

Mindfulness, yes! Do we embrace it so we can survive what life throws at us or is it one of our coping strategies?

    1. Hi Traveller, it is no doubt one of the strategies, which we have to employ yet it is not the only one. We have to keep changing them, depending on the situations. Hope and positivity definitely count as they never disappoint. That is my conviction. 🙂

  8. I used to be a pessimist and worry about the future. Now I try to look at it more like a learning experience: even if something bad happens that’s an opportunity for growth.

    1. How true! I agree with you and got thousands of such opportunities to grow.
Thank you for visiting Emotional Shadows stopping by to share your thought, much appreciated. 🙂 Love your blog for its bold themes.

  9. Life throws pleasant and unexpected surprises. Some good some bad. Some that make us feel the road is too long. Others, thats make us feel the road should never end. But every journey is unique and as beautiful as you wish to make it. It’s upon us to make it a memorable experience. So why worry about the path ahead when the beauty lies in making the current experience memorable.

    1. Beautiful thoughts!! Thank you for sharing.
All surprises are not pleasant dear friend yet they lead us on to the curve of learning…it may swerve yet we reach our destination if we remain positive. 🙂

  10. So much of your poem I can relate to Balroop.. We venture forward in our lives following our instincts, trusting that the path we are on leads us to greater fulfilment .
I once asked my guides ‘Why can I see what is before others yet not see what is on my own path?’ the answer came back, that I have to walk my own road, and learn my own lessons. If I knew what was before me, I would maybe side step them in advance and learn nothing!.. 🙂

So I trust.. And know that the path I am now on is the one I am meant to be on.. 🙂 Having Loved ones share it makes it all worth while.. 🙂

    Such an insightful, beautiful poem..
    Love and Blessings

    1. Dear Sue, thank you so much for sharing those pearls of wisdom…so true! Only when we walk do we discover the way…we get accustomed to dealing with the thorny path…that is the law of learning.

I didn’t question my path till I discovered I could change it and yes, trust kept me going…trust in my own efforts, trust in the support of loved ones and that is how I found all the blessings, waiting for me on the way. 🙂

Many thanks for such beautiful words dear friend. Love and hugs back to you. Have a lovely Sunday. 🙂

  11. What a lovely poem and it has forced to be instantly venture into deep reflection. So true we suppress our inner desire to come out and move to the future and explore the unknown and expand our horizon of looking at life and the way we live everyday.

Yes, we keep meeting new faces and we keep making new friends and we keep questioning our past friendships, analyzing our fragile relationships in a delicate society…we need the support and anchor of hidden forces to guide us and take us in to realms of imagination and world of magical fantasy…the hidden forces as rightly highlighted are the trust, the hope and the love that we hold on in such venture and in eventualities where we have no other options to lift ourselves and move forward in life…life needs those hidden forces to push us and that acts as pat to power our inner strength to take the outside forces.

As always such a pleasure reading such profound thoughts and presented is such simplicity and the subtle inherent message makes it truly magical piece of post…
Hope you had lovely Sunday and take care!!!
    😀

  12. Hi Nihar,

I am so glad that you liked this poem and you too reflect on the possibilities that future holds for us. Imagination is the greatest gift that we have been endowed with and if we try to fly on its wings, we can see a lot of future accomplishments if hope and trust remain by our sides.

Love makes our journey easier! Thank you dear friend for sharing your profound reflections, they are appreciated as always. Hope your Sunday was wonderful. Stay blessed. 🙂

  13. Graet poem… the last stanza truly resonated with me … as we came across new faces, we might hint new possibilities… but it is so true that relationships are fragile… I think nowadays, even more as the whole background of material values alters priorities… and by that I mean `basic´things.. I wonder why certain peeps email you to say hi briefly… and then, soon later, can not talk much I am busy… I just felt amazed at such things, such lack of tact… well, that was an example… ha…. sending much love.
